We all love a good pizza! In fact, I am not sure I have ever met someone who dislikes it. As Head Chef at Pezzo D’Italia, I have picked out my Top 10 Italian Pizzas.
You may notice from our menu that we are not like your classic British restaurant or takeaway. Our pizza toppings stick to their classic Italian roots. We stay away from ingredients such as barbeque sauce or pineapple that are far from the authentic Italian classics we love.
Here’s my Top 10 Italian Pizzas from our Pezzo menu:
10 – Tonno (Tomato Sauce, Mozzarella, Tuna, Onions)
This may not be something you are used to seeing here in England. But, in Tuscany where I trained and learnt my skills, we adored seafood! The Italians love nothing more than good, fresh, locally sourced food. For me, tuna was one of these foods, so I simply had to incorporate it into one of our delicious pizzas. Mix it together with some onions and the classic mozzarella and tomato sauce, you’re onto a winner.
9 – Pizza ai Funghi (Tomato Sauce, Mozzarella, Mushrooms, Parsley, Olive Oil)
Mushrooms! You either love them or you hate them. Personally, we love them. That fresh earthy flavour that is so unique matches perfectly with the rich tomato sauce base. Top it off with the parsley and olive oil and you have a heavenly combination of flavours and textiles.
8 – Quattro Formaggi (Tomato Sauce, Mozzarella , Parmesan, Gorgonzola, Pecorino and Oregano)
Quarttro Formaggi, otherwise known as the 4 cheese pizza. If you love cheese then you will be in dairy heaven with this pizza. Our blend of classic cheeses brings together the classics! Topped with Italian oregano just to chop through all that dairy, this pizza is an authentic classic.
7 – Quattro Stagioni (Tomato Sauce, Mozzarella, Mushrooms, Ham, Olives, Pepperoni)
The quattro stagioni is a pizza that is topped in quadrants. Each of the main toppings; mushrooms, ham, olives, and pepperoni, is in their own pizza quarter. I love this combination of flavours together, but if you wanted to share or enjoy them separately this is perfect!
6 – Boscaiola (Mushrooms, Black Olives, Cooked Ham, Tomato Sauce & Mozzarella)
Mushrooms again, I know…
But, combined with our delicious cooked ham and fresh black olives this combination is an Italian classic. These authentic flavours are simply irresistible on our fresh dough. The cooked ham is what gives the boscaiola an edge over the fungi pizza for me. The succulent ham lifts the flavours of the olives and mushrooms to another level.
5 – Vegetariana (Tomato Sauce, Mozzarella, Mushrooms, Peppers, Spinach & Black Olives)
Here’s one for the vegetarians out there. This pizza packs a seriously healthy punch! With an exquisite, fresh combination of tomato, mushroom, peppers, spinach and black olives. This pizza is so delicious you won’t even realise that you are eating your 5 a day. So if you don’t eat meat or you want a healthy dish with more excitement than a salad, the vegetariana is for you.
4 – Calzone with Spicy Salami & Ricotta Cheese (Half Folded Pizza with Mozzarella, Ricotta cheese and Spicy Salami plus Tomato Sauce on top)
Would this even be a top 10 pizza list without a calzone making an appearance?! I adore calzones, the way we create and bake them fresh is all done to emphasise and lock in those tasty flavours. My personal favourite calzone has to include our spicy salami. The heat combined with the ricotta cheese makes a perfect combination – not too spicy, but not too plain. If you have never tried a calzone you should absolutely start with this one.
3 – Tricolore (Mozzarella, Bresaola, Parmesan Flakes)
If you have not heard of bresaola before then you are missing out. Bresaola is classic Italian deli meat originating in a long Alpine valley in the Lombardy region of Northern Italy. It is most commonly beef, but it can also be venison or pork. The meat is salted and air-dried to lock in all that delicious flavour. The parmesan flakes compliment the bresaola flavours perfectly. Pair it with our fresh mozzarella and you have a real authentic Italian pizza.
2 – Sarda (Tomato Sauce, Mozzarella, Pecorino Cheese, Spicy Salami)
The sarda pizza is the classic Italian version of what is more commonly known as a pepperoni pizza in England. However, in my ‘biased’ opinion, ours is better…
Our spicy salami paired with authentic salty pecorino cheese works beautifully together. In the UK the pepperoni pizza is one of the Brits favourite pizzas. So it should come as no surprise that it’s a worldwide favourite too. It just got pipped to the number one spot for me.
1 – Margherita (Tomato Sauce, mozzarella, basil)
Our number one spot of course has to be the classic Margherita pizza. Nothing will ever be able to beat this beautiful pizza to my number 1 in the top 10 pizzas. This Italian classic is so simple yet full of flavour it can always be relied upon. Margheritas are a perfect choice every time and never disappoint me. The zingy tomato sauce, with fresh mozzarella, and homegrown basil is simply irresistible and will forever be my favourite.
